The first-letter method for memorizing Scripture
Example
Psalm 119:11 (WEB) — "I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." — becomes: I h h y w i m h, t I m n s a y.
The routine
- Read the full verse aloud three times, slowly.
- Switch to first letters and recite. Peek only when stuck.
- Repeat until you can recite from letters twice without peeking.
- Remove the letters and recite from the reference alone.
- Write the letters on a card or phone note for the day's spare moments.
Why it beats rereading
Rereading feels fluent but builds little memory. Recalling from minimal cues is effortful — and that effort is what makes a verse stick.
Where it fits
First letters are one stage in a bigger method: understand the verse, chunk it, use first letters, recall with nothing, then review over weeks. Noah – Bible Memory includes a first-letter stage in every lesson; The Bible Memory App and Versify have first-letter modes too. Full method: How to memorize the Bible.
